3-Hole External Aquarium Overflow / Weir Box

Our external aquarium overflow, also commonly known as an external weir box, is designed to transfer water from the main display aquarium to a sump filtration system while keeping the overflow chamber and drain plumbing outside the internal display area.

This style of overflow is particularly suited to premium custom aquariums, built-in-home & office aquariums, wall-integrated aquariums and cabinetry-based projects where external plumbing can be hidden while still remaining accessible for future maintenance or adjustments.

The 3-hole configuration includes:

• 2 main drain
• 1 emergency drain

The overflow is created using a waterjet-cut spillway through the selected aquarium panel. This opening is then finished internally with fixed black acrylic combing to create a clean appearance while allowing water to flow into the external overflow box.

The external overflow box itself is constructed from glass to suit our required specifications and is installed and sealed onto the outside of the aquarium during the build process.

Bulkhead holes are drilled through the base of the external overflow box and can be individually sized to suit 20mm, 25mm, 32mm, 40mm or 50mm Australian PVC plumbing. Purpose made aquarium bulkhead fittings are included in our price and are designed to suit Australian PVC pipe sizes with a push-fit connection.

A return pipe / plumbing is incorporated in our external overflow box. Returns are typically routed separately through the aquarium panel or over the top of the aquarium.

Drain plumbing and pipework are not included in this price. Plumbing packages are available separately.

External overflow sizing and positioning are configured to suit the aquarium layout, with limited adjustments available where required. The overflow can be positioned in a range of locations along the upper section of the aquarium, and we liaise with the customer to determine the most suitable placement for the project.

One of the main advantages of an external overflow is that it preserves the full internal display area of the aquarium, providing maximum space for aquascaping and livestock. It also provides easier access to the drain plumbing for future maintenance, adjustment or additions.

The trade-off is that the overflow extends beyond the footprint of the aquarium and requires suitable clearance behind or beside the tank. For this reason, external overflows are especially well suited to built-in aquariums, custom cabinetry, wall installations and other architectural aquarium projects where the overflow and plumbing can be concealed while remaining accessible.
